My interest in Mountain House foods comes from the aspect of emergency preparedness, not camping. Articles I've read recommend that you have a minimum of 1-3 months water and food. With that in mind, I evaluated the Chicken Fried Rice on these points:1. Plus - This tastes very good. Though I was testing it in my kitchen, I poured the boiling water right into the pouch as you would if I was camping. The rice was soft but not mushy.2. Minus – As with most prepared foods, this has a lot of sodium. One cup of the prepared rice has 600 mg of sodium. A whole bag, which is 2 1/5 cups, has a whopping 1500 mg. To quote the Mayo Clinic's website: "The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day — or 1,500 mg if you're age 51 or older, or if you are black, or if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease."I ate one bag for dinner as a one-dish casserole type meal. I was definitely full, so I wouldn't have needed to make the whole bag my meal. My point is, though, that as an emergency food, where you might not have fresh veggies to eat on the side, this Chicken Fried Rice has a lot of salt.3. Plus – Ease of preparation is excellent. Just pour boiling water into the pouch and stir. Seal the pouch (it has a zip-like closure), wait 10 minutes, open and eat.4. Minus – In a pinch, you can just eat this straight from the pouch, but it takes some knawing and it will make you thirsty. So you need not only potable water but very hot potable water. As almost all emergency-storage foods I've come across do need added water, I guess this is a sort-of minus.5. Plus – If you're in an emergency and counting on your stored food, this seems like a great option. Good calorie count to give you energy – 260 calories per cup – and a decent amount of protein and saturated fat (no trans fat):In one cup, 8 g fat, 36 g carbs, 11 g protein6. Plus – Long shelf life. The bag of Chicken Fried Rice I just purchased has a use-by date of November 2027.Contains milk, soy, wheat and eggA good choice for our emergency supplies. I'm trying more of the Mountain House brand supplies.Happy Reader
